Update: How We Are Doing with Toddler and a Newborn

mommy and patrick

I read somewhere that in order to live a happy life, one has to throw out the idea of perfection.  Readers, I miss writing to you but in order for me to keep writing on this blog, I am going to have to throw away my idea of well-groomed writing, if that is a thing.

Not to give away too many secrets, but in the past, I have sometimes returned to an entry again and again to proofread or even add more material.  For now, I am going to have to throw away such things if

I want to keep this blog going.

So to answer the question mentioned in the title of this blog entry, how are we doing?  Well, we are okay.

The most trying member of sometimes we are doing pretty darn good but sometimes things are more challenging.  Before Baby Nugget was born I was very afraid that he would be a fussy baby, but luckily he is pretty laid back as far as small babies are concerned.  It is actually our toddler, Mr. Man, who is the challenging member of the family right now.

Mr. Man has many wonderful qualities like curiosity and ingenuity and is really very good at solving his own problems.  However, sometimes these qualities can be for the lack of a better word, annoying. For example, a week or so ago, he turned over a Tupperware toy bin and placed it under the thermostat where he used it as a stepping stool and turned off the heat.  I saw that he did turned over the bin and played with the buttons on the thermostat but did not figure out that he turned off the heat until  until 5:00 am the next morning when I wondered why our house was so cold (it was 57 degrees in the house when I figured this out).

I actually started writing this blog entry on Friday and feared I would never write on my blog again because Mr. Man is now in a toddler bed and refuses to nap.  He had been climbing out of his crib for some time now so we bit the bullet and took the side off of his crib.  Ever since then, he has not napped.  He was not really napping last week either when the side of his crib was up and he was climbing out.

Right now our strategy is that he will have one hour of quiet time a day in his room.  We have toddler proofed his room to the best of our ability and if he does anything dangerous during quiet time, we will remove that item from his room, however, we have decided not to police his room during naptime.  This hour a day will be downtime for everyone.  So here I am blogging again while wearing Baby Nugget.

Mr. Man is really fun thought and can be very sweet, so I have to remember to not take it personally when he acts especially toddler-ish.  He really likes Baby Nugget and always says “I love you” to Baby Nugget when he goes to bed.  He really wants to help give Baby Nugget a bath and sometimes shares his beloved key chains with Baby Nugget.  Key chains are among Mr. Man’s most cherished possessions and he favors different ones every day (he has a least five of them and one of them is actually a Christmas ornament not a key chain, but he calls them his “keys”).

Sometimes it is just fun to relax and laugh.  The Honest Toddler is one of my favorite websites to laugh and unwind when it gets to be a little much being around a toddler.
