Can’t you just smell the delicious smells in the air? Later this week is one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. I love many things about it: getting together with family, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, delicious food, and the cool air. I know that Thanksgiving is this week, but I really wanted to share with you a few Thanksgiving favorites to share with the young people in your life. I have recommendations for the very young and those who are a little older. I will start with the recommendations for younger children first***.
Feast for 10 by Catheryn Falwell: Come and count along as the a family shops for and prepares a feast for 10. This books is a great read even for the youngest listener. It is even available in board book size. A storytime favorite that I used frequently in the library during the Thanksgiving season.
Thanksgiving With the Tappletons by Eileen Spinelli and illustrated by Maryann Cocca-Leffler. Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday of the Tappleton family but everything seems to be going wrong. The bakery is sold out of pies, the Turkey slips away, and even the salad is messed up. What will the Tappletons do, find out, in this book about food and family for preschool readers.
Thank you Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving by Laurie Halse Anderson. Young readers will enjoy this non-fiction picture book about the “lady editor” who persistently petitioned and spoke about our country’s need to make Thanksgiving a national holiday until President Lincoln listened and made Thanksgiving a holiday in 1863. For readers grades 1-4.
Balloons Over Broadway: the True Story of the Puppeteer of the Macy’s Parade by Melissa Sweet. Did you know that the idea and design for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Balloons came from a Guatemalan/ German immigrant who immigrated to New York to begin his puppeteer career? Tony Sarg had novel ideas all his life, but when he was contacted Macy’s to create sky puppets for the annual employee Thanksgiving parade, he tried many iterations until he got it just right. For children 4-8, but interesting for all ages.
The Hobokan Chicken Emergency by Daniel Pinkwater and illustrated by Tony Auth. Feathers fly when Arthur Bobowics brings home 265 pound live chicken with a mind of her own instead of a turkey for Thanksgiving. Will the town’s people make it out alive? Read this fun short novel to your family and find out. Fun for all ages. Written on a 3rd grade reading level, it will have your family in stitches.
