I am here to talk about Guy Fieri. Well, not really. When I started writing this blog post two weeks ago today, I wanted to talk about Guy Fieri but life happened.
If I tried to recount it all to you now it might not be that interesting. Mostly, I took care of two little boys, did some laundry, made some dinner, ran in another 5K, went to a children’s museum, worked a little at my job, and finished half of the new Margaret Atwood book The Testaments. We also got a new roof and had our van in the shop at least once.
And truthfully, I didn’t really want to talk about Guy Fieri. I don’t know that much about the actual man. I have never watched Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives the show he hosts on Food Network. I haven’t really even spent very much time watching The Food Network. But I like the Bobby Moynihan impression of Guy Fieri that he did on Saturday Night Live. Here it is:
When I was first attempting to write this post, Mr. Man, my now four year old son, interrupted me by coming downstairs after his nap and wondering what I was doing. So I showed his this clip from Youtube. He liked it and asked me to show his the other ones. So I showed him the Saturday Night Live Guy Fieri by Bobby Moynihan Super Bowl clip, because I am a responsible parent. He liked those too and now he likes to quote them. Whoops , I guess there are worse things.
What I was originally going to say about Moynihan’s Guy Fieri impression is that despite the way that the food that he makes in the clip look gross and very boozy, it makes me really excited about Thanksgiving.
I don’t really remember much about Thanksgiving last year since it happened less than a month after my mother passed away. I wasn’t fantasizing about sage and delicious stuffing. I wasn’t thinking about dark meat turkey and gravy. I certainly wasn’t thinking about Manichevitz and Sprite in wine glass, which is a old Gaffron-family cocktail recipe. I must say, if you obtain from celebrating a holiday in your heart-of-hearts, when you come back to the holiday you have more a vigor for celebrating it. At least that’t the way I feel about Thanksgiving this year. Bring it on!
I like Fieri/ Moynihan’s spirit in the clip. I love the herb sage as a seasoning and I look forward to Thanksgiving food that tastes like it has a little wine in the recipe. If this is the spirit of Guy Fieri’s recipes maybe I learn more about him.
I might like the show. I like diners, drive-ins, and dives. (All the things his show is about). When Mr. Katie and I were first married and only had dogs to care for, more often than once we drove 60-90 minutes away to go to two different drive-in movie theaters. If memory serves correct, I believe we both slept through the second movie at the theater that was 90 minutes away. ,I remember it being a sleepy, somewhat grumpy ride home. In retrospect, perhaps our vision was too grand that night.
As for dives, during the days when we would visit drive-ins, Mr. Katie and I used to own a self-published, restaurant guide that I bought at a craft fair to off-the path restaurants and amusements in central Pennsylvania. We faithfully consulted it when we didn’t have any plans on a weekend night.
This, by the way, is not a problem that I ever have now. These days we mostly eat-in on weekends but if we go out we usually pick a place that is good for kids.
So anyway, my point is that maybe I should get into Guy Fieri this holiday season. He might be on to something. He seems to have a real joie de vie that is enviable. Rather, at least Bobby Moynihan’s impression of has it. For as you know, I can’t speak to what the real Fieri is like but I hope he has that same spirit.
As I write this, I hear my older son, Mr. Man, coming down the steps, post-nap. It is probably about time I wrap things up or I might not publish this post for another two weeks.
See you soon,
Katie
