Pictures from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia

Back at the beginning of May we joined Mr. Man’s cub scout troop at the Franklin Institute. It was a very fun day where we saw many things that captured our imaginations. For the initiated, the Franklin Institute is a science education museum in Philadelphia. It has exhibits like the walk-thru-heart and a huge tesla coil that goes off once an hour while during museum hours.

Our trip to the Franklin Institute began with a viewing of the special exhibit that was currently at the museum called The Art of Brick. It is an exhibit of Lego sculptures all made by one artist named Nathan Sawaya.

The displays made by the artist were very cool.

After viewing the displays the artist was exhibiting, we enjoyed playing in the build your own lego creation area for upwards of an hour.

After we viewed The Art of the Brick, we viewed a planetarium show at the Franklin Institute. It might have been the first planetarium show I have ever seen in my life. Mr. Man seems to have retained a lot of the information that he learned while watching the show because he keeps telling me things I am only vaguely understanding about the universe. I have not pictures from that part of the trip.

Then we had lunch and after lunch we visited the room with the walk-thru-heart.

Mr. Man is standing next to his Denner (person leading Cub Den in Cub Scouts) who is known as Miss Jamie. She is awesome! The telsa coil is in the right corner. I can’t explain the science of the tesla coil but you can read about it here.

Kindergarten Nugget is riding in some cool old airplane that is on exhibit in another room. Don’t ask me, I was reading books at puppies and hamsters while other kids were reading about airplanes.

Here is a picture of Mr. Katie getting Kindergarten Nugget situated during one of the many times he climbed inside of it that day. You can see the airplane. I think it might have been used in a war.

We saw many other exhibits that day, but one of the ones that we liked best was a large section that was all about the brain. Here is a picture of Mr. Man playing in the brain playground. I think that nets are supposed to be synapses. The playground was dark with strange music. It reminded me of the Upside Down realm on the show Stranger Things. Kindergarten Nugget loved it and since it was the last area that we went to for the day, I loved the bench for parents in this area.

A good time was had by all. Thanks for joining me on this adventure.

  1. Well it sure does look like Nugget really enjoyed himself. He is so happy doing all the things. In the Brain, is it really up in the air? No fear of heights! As for Mr. Man he is always learning and teaching! LOL!
