Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Are you looking for the perfect summer read, I have got it right here for you.

I don’t know why I waited so long to read this.

You know it is a good book when you wish that is wasn’t over. Reading Lessons in Chemistry was like eating a delicious box of chocolates.

It was so good. I wish that I could still be reading this.

Lessons in Chemistry is the story of a Elizabeth Zott, a female chemist in the the 1950’s and 60’s, who gets thwarted at every turn because of her sex. When she is in her 20’s in the early 1950’s, she meets a wonderful brilliant fellow scientist, Calvin Evans, and they have a fairy tale romance. Life intervenes and the romance ends. At least she has his notebooks though. That’s where she learns some of the secrets about his past and his upbringing.

Calvin is still a bit of a mystery even after she reads his notebooks.

Even stranger, everyone he loves seems to die accidently, though Elizabeth is still alive. Sometimes she feels like she might want to die though.

Years later, when Elizabeth Zott is in her 30’s and it is now the 1960’s she becomes the host the most popular cooking and chemistry show television has ever seen. She has a bright young daughter. She befriends her neighbor and her television producer. She teaches her dog over 900 words. She teaches woman of America about chemistry on national television. She inspires millions.

Life still isn’t easy though. Despite her success, she feels unseen and misunderstood.

What will become of Elizabeth Zott? Why did Calvin tell his mysterious pen pale that he HATED his father, Elizabeth though his father died in a car accident when he was six. And who is his mysterious pen pal anyway?
Read Lessons in Chemistry by Bonny Garmus, you won’t be disappointed.
This book will charm the pants off of you. I never wanted to stop reading it, which is a lot to say for a book where so many bad things happen to so many characters. Elizabeth Zott might become your new heroine.
