Christmas at Longwood Gardens

In early January, before the boys returned to school after break, we traveled to Chester County to see Christmas at Longwood Gardens. We began our visit around 11:00 am and stayed till around 3:30 pm when the winds whipped up and it started to feel very cold outside.

Longwood Gardens has some great fountains. Here is a picture that I took of the Italian Water Gardens at Longwood in August of 2014.

However, many of the outdoor fountains are not turned at Christmas time. (Or they didn’t have the patience to wait around in the cold air for the show to start. (Someday, I am sure we will see the winter fountain shows.)

Additionally, the boys do not really remember any of the fountains because we have never visited during the warm weather months while they were old enough to remember. So I guess this means we will just have to come back in the spring or summer!

Here are some of the roses and thorns from our visit this January:

On the positive side, since we visited earlier in the day, we got to enjoy many of the sights that are hard to enjoy in the evening when it is dark.

On the negative side, we didn’t get to see any of the light shows because we left before the lights came on. We could have seen the Open Air Theatre fountain show but we were cold and wanted to leave.

However, we had more access to the garden railway, children’s garden, and exploring the giant organ room because the crowds were smaller during the day.

The boys also explored the Canopy Cathedral treehouse for the first time on this visit.

Here are some pictures from our day:

Here are some pictures from the The Birdhouse tree house, garden railway, and our lunch spot.

In the afternoon, we explored the conservatory including the children’s garden, the chime tower, and the canopy cathedral treehouse.

It was a special day and we were tired by the end of our trip!
