What Has Katie’s Crew Been Up To Lately?

This week is the last week of school. Tomorrow is the last day.

You might not have heard much from me in the last month. May turned into a real Maytember for us. I am still trying to catch my breath. Tonight is the first school evening in a while where nobody in our house has anything on the calendar.

Nugget smiling at the family movie outing his teacher arranged for the Friday evening before Memorial Day weekend.

In the last month, both boys had field trips. Both boys had a music singing concert. We attended a school spring fest on a Friday evening as a family. During the school day the boys had “Play Day” (similar to the Field Days of yore).

Mr. Man had a “Peace Out” day of outdoor fun in recognition of the fact that his grade will be moving up to the Intermediate School (IS) next year. Mr. Man also toured the IS in an unprecedented, second May field trip.

I took Mr. Man to the IS afterschool to get “fitted” for an instrument with the band teacher. (He is going to play the trombone next year in 4th grade.) Mr. Katie took Mr. Man to a information session about the robotics club at the IS on the same night as his music concert at his elementary school. (Also in the last month, I have become a Lego Robotics team coach despite the fact that I have no robotic experience.)

Also Mr. Man worked hard with his classmates to present a class play. Yes, a class play. His entire grade at had the opportunity to put on a non-musical version of The Wizard of Oz. He worked on set design and stage crew. He and his classmates began working on the paly in January during after school time. We got to see the production last Thursday. A great show! (God bless his 3rd grade teacher who directed the production.)

Also last weekend we attended the end of the year Cub Scout pack picnic and moving-up ceremony. Both boys completed all of their requirements and advanced to their next rank. Nugget is now a Wolf Cub and Mr. Man is now a Webelo.

I also worked several times at my public library job, lead a Quizzo (trivia) night at my library this past Monday, worked my final shifts my community college until fall, and substituted as an instructional assistant one day at the boys school and substituted as a cafeteria monitor on another day.

This week, I am trying to get a few things done before the boys are home for the summer. I am going to make an effort today and tomorrow to take some time to enjoy a little free time before the summer. Sometimes it’s hard to stop and smell the roses and enjoy the present. Also this is Mr. Man’s last week at the only only elementary school he has ever attended. I need to take a minute to process the fact that my “little guy” is moving on in his school journey. To my knowledge they don’t have any ceremony make the occasion but he did his yearbook earlier this week and the students are encouraged to walk around and ask for signatures this week.

Here’s to breathing! Happy June!
