What Has Mr. Man Been Reading This Summer?

Here is what Mr. Man either finished the last week of school or at the beginning of summer break:

Which prompted me to look online to see if there were other graphic novels about Dungeons & Dragons and role-playing games . Here are some similar series we were able to find at our local library or by purchasing second-hand online.

Currently he is working on:

Truthfully, we do pay him $1 per book for every book that he reads. Additionally, he gets half of the price that he paid for a book back from us if he finishes reading the book. He often plugs that money back into buying more books. (He also likes to use his money to build his collection of different sided dice).

This summer he purchased these Dungeons & Dragons books with his own money. I don’t know know if these are the types of books that you finish. They seem more like reference books.

Earlier this summer, Mr. Man had me make copies of the character sheets from his Dungeons & Dragons handbook because he wants to start a players group. (We are aware of Dungeons & Dragons playing groups in the area, but most groups require that you be 12 years old to play, so he still has a few years to wait).

I have also been reading the Harry Potter series aloud to him at bedtime. In June we finished the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and have moved on to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Thanks to his Cousins Madeline and Charlotte for lending us the illustrated copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

I first enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series to myself 20 years ago. When the illustrated editions came out, I wasn’t sure if they were necessary. However, I am really digging enjoying the Jim Kay illustrations on this most recent reading of them. The pictures really do add something to the story. I think I am enjoying this reading of the story as much or more than Mr. Man is.

So to sum up Mr. Man’s summer so far, the theme for him is Dungeons & Dragons as well as graphic novels and Harry Potter.

What are you reading this summer?

  1. Very cool Mr. Man. Matt really likes D&D. He plays every Saturday night with a group of friends online. I’ll ask him if he knows of any way Mr. Man could find a group to play with.

    1. That’s awesome! I bet he would like that. I am glad that Matt has that community. I hope Mr. Man’s enthusiasm towards it lasts until he is old enough to play.

  2. Well, Katie you are getting in a lot of reading yourself. Next it will be the Hobbit. I have not read any of these books. LOL! Pops would be so proud of these boys.
