Tracker

Mr. Man drew this picture earlier this month in summer school.

We rehomed Tracker this past Sunday. He went to a foster home peopled by members of the rescue organization that we adopted him from.

It wasn’t that we didn’t love him or care about Tracker. It was a hard decision.

Tracker had been showing some aggression towards the boys for a little while. I think Mr. Katie and I kept thinking that he would just get more adjusted to us and some of that might dissipate.

Tracker seemed to do better with us before the boys got out of school for summer vacation. While school was still in session, it seemed like Tracker flourished by getting plenty of walks with me while also having plenty of napping time to himself. We don’t know all of his history, but based on what we observed, it seems like Tracker was an outside dog before he came to our house.

In mid-June, we took him to our veterinarian for a minor ailment. Our veterinarian told me in a very frank manor that he felt that Tracker was showing more aggression towards H. Nugget than he was comfortable with seeing. I was flabbergasted when he said this to me, but also I couldn’t deny that he was right. Tracker had seemed agitated to the point where I had removed the boys from the house. I took them to see a movie at the theater that very morning because I was having a hard time keeping Tracker apart from the boys while they were moving about the house.

This wasn’t the only discussion that we had with our veterinarian. Mr. Katie and I had a few more conversations with him over the next few days. By talking with him we learned that our veterinarian had a specialized background in dog behavior and training. He really was adamant that children should have a positive experience growing up with a dog. He felt that Tracker might do better in an adult household.

Mr. Katie and talked about it at length and contacted the rescue that we adopted Tracker from. The rescue agreed to take Tracker back once they found a temporary foster home for him.

While the boys were away at Scout Camp, I had very nice time spending time with Tracker. He is a great dog to hang out on the porch with or take a long walk with. I have no doubt that he would be a good dog friend for an adult who likes walking everyday. We all enjoyed him, we just didn’t trust him around the boys.

We miss him and he have been keeping him in our prayers. We adopted him from a well-run rescue with nice people so we take comfort in the fact that he is in good and caring hands.

We are going to take a break from having a dog for a while. We are going to remember the good times that he had with Tracker. He is a good boy and we will continue thinking about him.

  1. Oh, Katie, I’m so sorry for your family that you had to make this decision, but it was undoubtedly the right one. Your boys will remember Tracker in a positive light, and Tracker will find a home where he can relax a bit more. It sounds like Tracker really loved his adults and is in the care of a wonderful rescue organization. Love to you all!

  3. Hi K and B: it is with a heavy heart that I let you know that we had to send Tiki to the Rainbow Bridge yesterday, as she was experiencing significant problems with eating. She developed a tumor in her Mouth that doctors said she was too old to survive surgery. we waited until the last minute to take her over. like you said, i Hope tracker is well cared forby his new family. My thoughts are with you.
