Today Mr. Katie and I participated in something that I have wanted to be
part of for a long time.
We ran in the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia. It is the largest 10-mile road
race in the USA. We also ran near the Wells Fargo Center (where the Flyers play) which is where we met a long time ago so that was special to me because our wedding anniversary is coming very soon. Also this year we celebrated being together for 15 years.
Fun fact, the Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, was in Philadelphia today because his wife was running in the Broad Street Run!
It was pretty rainy today and it was a lot of work to get to the starting line.
The subway was free to ride but crammed in with runners.
It was also a lot of work to get home because of flooding and road closures.
It was quite a bit of work to train for it of course and picking up our bibs
yesterday required trip to Center City. We also asked my sister Liz to babysit
overnight so we could really enjoy our Philadelphia experience!
Thanks to Aunt Liz for babysitting! We really did enjoy our Philadelphia
experience. Yesterday, night we went out for dinner in Philadelphia and stayed
overnight in Philadelphia. Our anniversary is two weeks from now and I cannot
think of a better anniversary present.
But we had a great time. The best things in life are worth the effort. Thank
you again Liz!
Also, Mr. Katie and I enjoy having a theme for our race outfits. Today’s theme was NBC’s TV show Community and we wore these cool shirts. Community is a show that we quote sometimes. It is very wise and funny.
I remember when I first took up running 9 years ago. I prepared for my first
5k which was held on Cinco de Mayo at our local YMCA. It was a big deal for me.
Then, a few days later, I remember seeing on Facebook that an old friend of
mine ran in the Broad Street the very same week as my race. I never thought
that I would be able to run 10 miles. I was jealous of her at the time, but now
I can run 10 miles without quitting. Today, I ran in the Broad Street Run.
My preparation for the Broad Street Run has come to fruition for me, nine years and some change after I first took up running. This run was a special run for me. It is possible I will never participate in a race this size again and I really tried to soak in the experience today. Though it was rainy, the crowd cheering us on was terrific. They did not have to be out in the rain but there they were cheering heartily. I hope I can do for others what they did for us today.
That’s all I have today. I think I am going to sleep well tonight.
