I have been wanting to write more about myself, but sometimes I worry that I do not have anything profound to say. But I have small things to say, so I will start there.
One thing that I am looking forward to doing this summer is participating in my local library’s book club during the month of June. This library is not a library that I work at. I will purely be participating in this book club at a recreational level. I am thrilled to be able to do this because I have gotten more into reading during my free time in the past year.
The book for the month of June is called Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. I am am about halfway through the book and we will be meeting this coming Thursday so I guess I better hurry up. The author, Michelle Zauner, is a musician in the band Japanese Breakfast.
I actually saw the episode of Saturday Night Live where Michelle Zauner’s band Japanese Breakfast was the musical guest in 2021.
Here is a sketch that I remembered Michelle Zauner popping into at the very end. It is about adults with grey pigtails. It made me laugh. Maybe it will make you laugh too. Maybe it is because I want to have adult grey pigtails someday.
Crying in H Mart is her memoir about her relationship with her mother and growing up with a mixed Korean and American upbringing in Eugene, Oregon.
I like it so far but it has made me cry a little. Her mother dies of cancer when Zauner is 25 years old.
My husband, who has attended book clubs before, made me promise that I would not keep comparing my book to other books. That is his pet peeve when he has attended book clubs.
I have never been to a book club before as a participant. I have only gone as an observer so I would know how to conduct a book club if I were running one. I am looking forward to my first meeting.
If I like it, I will do it again.
I will let you know how it goes.
Love,
Katie
I read a review of this book, and now I want to read it too.
It is hard not to compare books to other books on book clubs, but I understand Mr. Katie’s point. Of you carved out time to read one book, it would be annoying to have the book club monopolized by people talking about totally different books.
Enjoy your book club Katie! That sounds like an interesting book.
I belong to a book club, and we meet about every 4-6 weeks depending on the availability of members. Since we hold at a different house each time, the hostess gets to pick the next book to be read. We usually stick to discussing one book and occasionally someone will make a comparison. it has been fun as we all know each other. Eileen is part of it too.
