I have been thinking deeply lately.
Next year Kindergarten Nugget will be in school full time and I have lately been pondering the question of what will become of me when he is in school full time.
[Side note: If we know each other in real life, please don’t ask me this question socially. If I decide to change the setup of my life, I will share it with you. Please let me have the gift of choosing to share it with you if I do decide to make such a change.]
So I have been having deep thoughts. I have been thinking about my own skills and talents as well as what I can uniquely offer the world.
With the increased chatter in the world today about Artificial Intelligence, I have been thinking deeply about what we as a people can offer that is unique and special and can’t be replicated by machines? What special skills do we as humans have that AI will never posses?
Let me just admit this, I have a fear of robots taking over. I think I have seen enough movies and read enough science fiction to know that is a fear that others possess as well.
I know I have touched on this before in a joking manner, see my about Cyborg Monday. I am being serious here though. I think we all need to pay attention to what is going on in the world.
I was just watching this clip of the Daily Show with John Stewart. [It’s great to see him on the Daily Show again.] It sort of has touched on many of the fears that I have that we as a people are maybe opening a pandora box with AI that we won’t know how to close. If you have time, I would watch the full clip, it is from last night’s episode.
I don’t claim to know that ins and outs of what AI can and cannot do at this point. However, I think our strengths as humans are in our abilities to reason and take in information without being programmed to do so. I think our strengths are in paying attention to the goings on of life.
As a people, I think that we can do better at paying attention and putting down our phones to pay attention to life. I am guilty of this. Perhaps this post is a reminder to myself to pay attention rather than a message to others.
Play an instrument, sing with your voice, take a walk, talk to another person, make a craft with your hands, and indulge in your humanness. Pay attention to what you are doing and ask yourself why you are doing it. It isn’t always possible to pay attention to every aspect of your life, but try when you can.
Do you the reader worry about the implications of AI in human life?
What special skills can human beings harness that are unique in their humanness in your opinion? Then ask ChatGPT its opinion. I just did this and I found it pretty enlightening actually.
Comment below if you would like.
While I do agree that the possibility of robots taking over is scary, I do appreciate that my iPhone uses AI to help me search for particular faces/words/things in my photos. It makes it easier to find a specific picture when I’m looking for it.
Thank you for your response Katie
Good blog post, Katie! I have a lot of thoughts on AI. I am still trying to put them together.
Thank you Jenny
