“I’m so glad that I live in a world where there are three separate editions of 18 More Fall Food and Activity Pairings Outside the Pumpkin Spice Realm to help me plan an awesome fall. I only wish there was one more focused on October.

-The People of Planet Earth

Howdy People of Planet Earth. It seems like your dreams are about to come true . . .

Let me explain.

October means so many things to so many people. It is the Pink Out month, where people wear pink and paint things pink to raise awareness about breast cancer. Fire Fighters raise awareness of home safety practices during Fire Prevention week. Maybe you or someone you know has a birthday in October as it is one of the most popular months for birthdays. Let’s not forget how popular spooky fun is this month.

One fact occurred to me recently, I haven’t explored my recent foray into food and activity pairings from every possible angle and I know my readers have probably been clambering for more.

I am so sorry to have let you down. I really am.

That’s why I am here to bring you:

The October Edition: 18 More Fall Food and Activity Pairings Outside of the Pumpkin Spice Realm

  1. Wrap up some squares of Potato Tart with Goat Cheese and Thyme to take with you while you embark on an autumn hang gliding beginner’s class in the Poconos. Lucky for you, the potato squares are fairly portable so you can eat them on the go.
  2. If hang gliding isn’t adrenaline inducing enough for you, you can illegally BASE jump off many different structures in Pennsylvania such as a windmill in Somerset County or skyscraper in Rittenhouse Square. A Vegan Cauliflower Gratin is the perfect accompaniment.
  3. Perhaps you are less of an adrenaline junkie and you are looking for a more pastoral endeavor. Bobbing for apples might be an activity that is just your speed. It pairs well with a Pimento Cheese Dip and Ritz crackers.
  4. Another great autumn activity that you can do at home is you can host a viewing party for the season finale of American Horror Story: Delicate. Whip up a Beef Wellington with all it’s delicious puff pastry to savor the occasion.
  5. Work on crafting the perfect Halloween costume and then craft a delicious Vegetarian Red Borscht. Your creative energies with be in sync with the soup’s rich red hues. If there is any indecision regarding your creative choices in costuming, this soup is sure to inspire brilliance.
  6. Speaking of red (and blue and white), this season you can cheer on the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Championship Series, which they will hopefully wrap up on Monday night. A Charred Cabbage and Lentil Soup is the perfect dinner for a 5:07 pm EST start time on a meatless Monday.
  7. Maybe you are less of baseball person and more of a hockey person. The first of six months of regular season hockey begins in October. Whip up some Baked Brie to enjoy while you watch General Manager Danny Brière’s Philadelphia Flyers begin their eight month quest for the Stanley Cup.
  8. Wear the spooky Halloween costume to an adult’s only Halloween party. Whip up some Halloween Dirt Cups and be the life of the party.
  9. You might be feeling extra cozy this time of year and you might opt for a night-in on Tuesday as well. I recommend watching all (4) Halloween episodes of the hit TV show Community while enjoying Buttered Noodles and Special Drink just as Abed Nadir would do during Inspector Spacetime.
  10. In October many people raise awareness about breast cancer by pinking out public fountains. Tint your city’s water fountain pink drink a cup of Cold Pink Borscht in a Glass. Beets are good for your health.
  11. Happy Birthday to October babies. October is ranks 4th in number of birth in the month after August, July, and September. Mix up a pitcher of Rose Sangria and celebrate with the birthday person in your life. If you don’t know an October birthday person, visit the maternity ward at your local hospital and share this pitcher with a newly postpartum mother; she will surely thank you.
  12. October is also Fire Prevention month. Visit a fire station and learn or brush up on fire prevention strategies. Then go home and make a Birthday Baked Alaska and practice your newly gained fire prevention skills with your local October birthday person as the lucky recipient of said Baked Alaska.
  13. Speaking of fires, the hills will look like they are on fire when you embark on an autumn leaf trainline through the countryside. Many historical railroads offer these scenic tours during the fall months. Make these Veggie Trolleys, featured on the children’s show Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and get your daily serving of fall vegetables for the day.
  14. Drive your firetruck in a local Halloween parade but don’t forget to whip up this Six-Foot Meatless Italian Hero to eat while you are driving and throwing candy.
  15. It’s Corn! Well, actually it’s a corn maze but still it’s pretty awesome. Make a thermos of this Moscow Mule Recipe from the New York Times to replenish your electrolytes while you are working your way through this yearly fall ritual.
  16. Make some Spiedies, marinated, grilled meat chunks slid onto a sub roll to bring with you on a haunted history graveyard tour.
  17. Purchase this French Croquembouche for Autumn for 125,00 Euros and bring to a spooky night hosted by your local state park or conservation association.
  18. Finally, light your jack-o’-lanterns and some additional candles and make some quiet space to observe the thinning between the spirit world and the living world. Make a Spooky Jack-O’-Lantern Pot Pie.
Happy Halloween!
