Adventures With Katie: Longwood Gardens Visit

A large hanging basket in the Longwood Gardens Conservatory. If I am correct it is the rabbit’s foot fern referred to in this article.

I like design. I like walking. I like Pleasure Gardens. I like taking an adventure. Every few years, or sometimes less than that, I like to make a 1.5 hour trek to Longwood Gardens. In fact, I have written about our visits there on this occasion in 2021 and on another trip in 2019.

A few weeks ago the boys were off from school for a teacher professional development day and I decided that the it might be a good day to take a trip to Longwood Gardens. The theme of the Conservatory, the main greenhouse at Longwood Gardens, during the time we were there was Winter Wonder. In fact, you can see that display until March 23rd. Beginning on March 30th, visitors can see Spring Blooms.

On our trip we ended up spending a lot of time in the Conservatory because the boys were having such a fun time playing in the Indoor Children’s Garden.

Here are some pictures of our time in the Children’s Garden. We liked it so much in fact that we left the Conservatory walked about another half mile at least and looked at the Chime Tower district and then after a snack, the boys told me that they really wanted to go back to the Children’s Garden.

One of Mr. Man’s favorite aspects of the Children’s Garden is the axolotl fountain that you can see him enjoying in the pictures below. Kindergarten Nugget has a lot of fun with the large paintbrushes that visitors can use to paint with water in the children’s garden.

Here is a picture of a rare blue poppy called the Himalayan Blue Poppy that was located very close the children’s garden. I had an opportunity to take it in while the boys were playing in the children’s garden. I didn’t even know that it was special until after I read some information about the winter show. The blue in the poppy was very brilliant to the eye when I looked at it.

Mr. Man and I took a selfie together in the main Conservatory area. Everything in the Conservatory is well lit and a feast for the eyes.

Besides visiting the Conservatory, we also visited the Main Fountain garden. I realized on this visit that we haven’t seen the Main Fountain and the Italian Water Gardens Fountains turned on since our visit in 2019. The boys don’t even know what those fountains look like because they only remember our visits during cold weather months. The outdoor fountains are not turned on until Mother’s Day weekend according to one of the guides we spoke with. The outdoor fountains are really something to behold so we will have to come back again soon. Still we got to see this hidden away, indoor fountain that is turned on in the winter. I have always liked this one because it feels like it is a little forgotten by the general public so when I am in the room with it, it feels a little special, like the water is falling for me and my family only.

We also saw two of the tree houses while we were there and we rode on a little tram/ golf cart thing to see the Webb Farmhouse. I think riding on the covered golf cart was Kindergarten Nugget’s favorite part of our day. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of us riding on the golf cart.

We had a great time and I have always felt that Longwood Gardens truly is the Disney World of gardens. It is something to behold. If you are in eastern Pennsylvania I recommend that you take a day to visit it.

Note: I am not being compensated in any way for this post. I just really like Longwood Gardens.
